Altrincham’s former goalkeeper Ethan Ross has signed for Forest Green Rovers on a one-year deal, bringing his wealth of National League experience to the club. The 29-year-old, who helped Altrincham reach the play-offs last season, joins Robbie Savage’s side as they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
What does Ethan Ross bring to Forest Green?
Robbie Savage, Forest Green’s manager, highlighted Ross’s experience as a key asset. “Ethan has been training with us over the past week,” Savage said. “He is a fantastic goalkeeper and brings a wealth of experience at this level, adding real competition to Pags (Fiachra Pagel) and Luke (McNicholas).” Ross, standing at 6ft 5in, began his career at Arsenal before spells at West Bromwich Albion, Colchester United, Lincoln City, and Stockport County. His time at Altrincham saw him make 65 appearances, keep 19 clean sheets, and help the Robins finish 13th in the National League with 57 points (17W-6D-23L) last season.
Why did Altrincham release Ross?
Ross’s departure from Altrincham follows a serious knee injury in 2025 that sidelined him for an extended period. Despite his contributions, including a five-game winning run (WWWWW) before his injury, the club opted not to renew his contract. Altrincham ended the 2025/26 season with 55 goals scored and 65 conceded, finishing 51 points behind league leaders York.
What’s next for Ross and Forest Green?
Ross becomes Forest Green’s eighth signing of the summer, joining the likes of Kyle Ajayi and Bryan Ifeanyi. He will wear the number one shirt and is expected to challenge for a starting spot. Savage expressed excitement about seeing Ross in action, saying, “I can’t wait to see him in match action.” Altrincham, meanwhile, will look to rebuild their squad after losing a key player who played a crucial role in their recent success.
