Kieron Dyer, manager of Southend United, was delighted after his team fought back to secure a 3-1 victory over Altrincham on the opening day of the season. The Shrimpers came from behind and managed to claim all three points in an impressive away performance.

The match began with Altrincham taking the lead early on, which Dyer acknowledged as a setback for his team. "Early on we couldn't quite get our press right, and from that, they scored a great goal from their point of view," he said. However, Dyer took responsibility for this mistake at half-time, telling his players that their communication was lacking.

"I owned that at half-time to the lads because we couldn't get our messages on quick enough, and that's not good enough," Dyer explained. The manager praised his team’s ability to adapt in the second half, noting that they managed to disrupt Altrincham's game plan by adjusting their pressing.

"We adjusted our press in the second half and they couldn't really get their patterns going," Dyer added. The Shrimpers capitalized on this change with a goal from Harry Cardwell, which Dyer described as coming from a good press.

Praise for the Subs Bench

Dyer was particularly pleased with his team's depth in the substitutes' bench and how it contributed to their comeback win. "One of the big messages I said to the subs is, if you look at our subs bench, no disrespect to Alty and their bench, we've got some game changers and some match winners," he stated.

The manager highlighted several players who could make a significant impact off the bench, including Coco, Sahid, Josh, and Lewys. Dyer emphasized that despite going 2-1 up, his team was not content with defensive subs but instead looked to maintain their attacking momentum.

"And as soon as we went 2-1 up, you could have been thinking defensive subs, but I knew when you've got Coco, Sahid, Josh, and Lewys that we can get another goal here," Dyer concluded. This victory marks a strong start for Southend United under Dyer's leadership.
